The Internet is a gold mine of information. It is the resource many people now turn to when they need answers, ideas and to carry out various forms of research.
Websites built on wiki software are a great online resource as they encourage the users of websites to create and edit the site’s content. Wikipedia is often considered one of the best known wikis, and in January 2007, entered the top ten most visited sites on the internet.
Wikipedia has received major media attention as an online source of breaking news as it is constantly updated. When Time Magazine recognized “You” as their Person of the Year 2006, praising the accelerating success of on-line collaboration and interaction by millions of users around the world, Wikipedia was the first particular Web 2.0 service mentioned, followed by YouTube and MySpace.
Another wiki, wikiHow is a collaborative writing project that aims to build the world’s largest, highest quality how-to manual. It is a free resource that offers solutions to the problems of everyday life - from checking for skin cancer to growing freshwater aquarium plants and surviving an encounter with an ostrich. wikiHow currently contains 29,926 articles — written, edited, and maintained primarily by the site’s audience.
Wikis are also being used privately between groups of people to coordinate anything from engineering projects to planning weddings. They are a great tool and several free solutions can be found here.
